Vinduesarealerne er designet og placeret, så man fra de i alt ca. 4.500 m2 kontor-, undervisnings- og kantinearealer får et såvel varieret som funktionelt dagslysindtag. Fra alle lokaler er der sørget for, at udsigten til de smukke omgivelser er blevet en naturlig og integreret del af arbejdspladsens indretning. På 1. sal er der foretaget en udsparing i bygningskroppen, så det her er muligt at trække luft på en sydvendt tagterrasse. Ligeledes er der dannet et overdækket uderum for kantinen mod vest, under bygningens udkragede 1. sal. Statoils eksisterende administration var før spredt ud i en samling bygninger og pavilloner, der var i en utidssvarende forfatning, såvel indretningsmæssigt som byggeteknisk. Da bygningerne tillige ikke opfyldte nye, skærpede krav i forhold til sikkerhedsafstande mod raffinaderiets tankanlæg, blev det besluttet, at de administrative funktioner skulle samles i en helt ny bygning på de kuperede landbrugsarealer øst for produktionsanlægget. Den nye bygning er placeret, så den retningsmæssigt underordner sig raffinaderiets ortogonale nord-syd/øst-vest struktur. Ankomstvejen til den nye bygning ligger i direkte forlængelse af en stor øst-vestgående fordelingsvej i raffinaderiets produktionsanlæg. Man ankommer langs bygningens sydfacade og modtages af et nyt anlæg, hvor parkeringsarealerne er lagt ud som terrasser, tilpasset det eksisterede terræn. Mtwara, Tanzania Challenge: Sub-Saharan Africa will account for most of the world’s population growth over the coming decades with the addition of a predicted 1.1 bn people by 2050 . This will necessitate the construction of millions of new homes. New housing in hot, humid regions of sub-Saharan Africa usually consists of single-level, poorly ventilated concrete block structures which predispose families to a number of preventable diseases. Minimal airflow leads to a hot indoor climate which reduces the use of bed-nets and increases malaria transmission. Cooking inside without adequate ventilation results in many women developing respiratory tract infections, and inadequate water supply and sanitation predisposes family members, especially children and the elderly, to enteric infections. Contribution: A growing body of recent scientific work is starting to demonstrate that modifying house designs could result in broad benefits in several disease categories . The Star Homes Project is a clinical trial that investigates the impact of improved housing on family health in Tanzania. 110 improved houses with separate latrines are being constructed in 60 villages throughout the Mtwara region and the health of residents will be compared to those living in 440 control homes over a 3-year period. The design of the houses draws inspiration from the Magoda project and traditional homes in South-East Asia which are often well adapted to the hot-humid climate. The front bench and plan layout draw inspiration from houses local to the Mtwara region. In addition, the design team utilised iterative parametric modelling and environmental simulation techniques, such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to improve indoor comfort and the design of individual elements, like the smokeless stove. The design of the houses aims to reduce rates of malaria, respiratory tract infections and enteric diseases. For example, bedrooms are raised with larger, permeable openings to help lower indoor temperature and reduce entry of Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes. The Star Homes project has been developed by a cross-disciplinary team of architects, physicians, social scientists and entomologists, alongside local community leaders and stakeholders. Hospital staff may live within the clinic itself, in wards converted into bedrooms, or stay long term in guesthouses. This can lead to a feeling of social isolation and being unable to escape from work. Many clinics are therefore susceptible to a high employee turnover as hospital staff leave to seek other opportunities closer to the city. The Rural Doctor’s Housing project, offers comfortable long term accommodation for both hospital staff and visiting medical researchers in Siem Pang village, Cambodia. Located on the banks of the Tonle Sekong river, the housing complex celebrates the unique opportunities which rural living can offer, such as solace from a hectic modern urban life, proximity to nature and a strong local community. The project will be undertaken in two phases—firstly the construction of a common house with adjoining residence (completed late 2019), followed by an additional three future homes. The site plan includes an access route for patients arriving by boat to the hospital as many of the surrounding villages are connected only by the river. Care was taken when laying out the buildings and elevated walkways so that no mature trees had to be felled for the construction of the project. It is hoped that once the site becomes occupied, residents will make use of the vegetated buffer zone between the homes and the access road as a kitchen garden. The Rural Doctor’s Housing project is constructed from timber sourced from Siem Pang village and is built by local carpenters. Architectural inspiration was drawn from a historical exploration of neighbouring buildings and vernacular homes in Siem Pang village, with a focus on traditional timber construction detailing. The height of the buildings above ground level (over 2.5m at certain points) was transcribed from a survey of the oldest buildings on the Tonle Sekong riverbank. This appreciation of the Cambodian vernacular had unexpected benefits—in September 2019, during the construction of the first phase of the project, the river level rose by 12m. Despite many local buildings being severely flooded, the Rural Doctor’s Housing project survived due the height of the pillar foundations. Each 41m2 home includes a small kitchen, dining room, en suite, personal workspace and a private balcony. Orientation, shading and natural materials are among a range of passive design strategies used in the project to ensure inside spaces are comfortable and low maintenance in the hot, humid climate. All openings have been designed specifically to screen for mosquitos and to allow for maximum cross-ventilation, eliminating the need for air conditioning. Openable louvred shutters provide privacy whilst maintaining natural light and ventilation indoors. The homes are connected to a 58m2 common house via a series of timber pedestrian bridges, designed to facilitate chance encounters between residents, while respecting privacy. With a communal eating area, shared balcony and private guest room, the common house offers a semi-private space for the hospital staff to socialise, relax together and build strong connections outside of the hospital environment.
